With the current extension and expansion of power systems and electrical devices more and more emphasis is being placed on the continuity and quality of the power delivered to our houses, businesses and factories. Electrical power is being required cleaner and flawlessly. In this case special care has to be taken when using auto-transformers due to their un-isolated properties and therefore power quality expected at the output of auto-transformers is the same as the one received at the input. An auto-transformer is a transformation device similar to any other power or control transformer. It takes in voltage at a certain level and transforms it to another level. This process harmlessly and efficiently reversible thus creates a great versatility of use. The heart of this transformer is made out of a single coil that is tapped at the desired outputs to obtain the desired transformation ratios.
Due to this particular construction mentioned above, and for a same power rating, auto-transformers are generally smaller in size then their power transformer counterparts. Being smaller in size implies automatically a smaller core and a smaller coil, thus less core and copper losses. This is a very important criteria when choosing between a transformer and an auto-transformer, because this difference in size means a higher efficiency for auto-transformers.
With all the above mentioned sections, it can be seen that auto-transformer –or sometime called buck and boost transformers- are special devices that are to be used when special requirements are to be met. These applications range from the starting of motors to general purpose applications requiring very high efficiency machines.
